You may well know that we run Bramley Mermaids Club at Bramley Baths. What you probably don’t know is that Bramley Mermaids is quietly changing the lives of women across Leeds and Yorkshire. This is Caroline’s story…
For Caroline, being in water was scary. Ever since a near-drowning experience, it had filled her with panic – it was as if an unseen magnet was pulling her under the surface.
Joining Bramley Mermaids Club changed that.
Being with other women who supported her, built confidence that made her feel safe. The water became a space where she could feel strong, calm, and have fun.
What’s most remarkable is what came next.
With her new confidence, Caroline began supporting other water-nervous friends, gently encouraging them and transferring this new found water-confidence to them. For Caroline, like many members, Bramley Mermaids isn’t just a swim club. It’s recovery. It’s confidence. It’s women lifting each other up, and returning to the surface.

Inspired by the incredible Diane Nyad and her amazing achievements, we’re taking on an epic swim fund challenge: swimming 180 km, length by length, splash by splash.
Every single length represents another step toward building a stronger, healthier, and more inclusive community for women in Bramley and across Yorkshire.
With 17 Mermaids, over 6000 lengths, and less than a month left to complete our journey, we’re striving for a gentle yet determined effort to do our best – as a team.
