  • Human Aquarium Uk

HumanAquariumUk, Environmental; Activism coming to leeds

Yorkshire Life Aquatic believes social empowerment starts with you.

Have you become detached from the realities of keeping animals in captivity for entertainment ? Do you see the part people play in funding these industries by simply buying ticket to shows such as Sea World?  Are you aware just how much of the plastic we buy ends up in the oceans and in our ecosystem and bodies as a result?

Human Aquarium is a photographic/ film project looking at performance from the perspective of dolphins and orcas. The research and development phase during stage 1 explores the link between audiences and the entertainment industry. It aims to expose the control and cruelty in the way we have become desensitised to the exploitation of animals for our own entertainment.

Despite the success of documentaries such as ‘Blackfish’ and ‘The Cove’ which exposed the inherent cruelty of cetacean captivity, ‘SeaWorld’ style shows are still popular and profitable, with new marine parks and dolphinaria opening all over the world.

UK tourists may still support the captive industry by attending dolphin shows abroad while on holiday, and many people are still unaware that by simply buying a ticket to a show, they are perpetuating an industry that slaughters and enslaves marine mammals for profit.

This is especially relevant in land-locked cities such as Leeds as people simply do not think about the issues and when offered Dolphin trips by tour operators they don’t realise what they are buying into. We will be using direct action to help change human behavior to educate people about alternative ways to see dolphins/whales in an ethical way.

The exhibition which will take place in February 2019 at St John’s Centre in Leeds City Centre will recreate a Sea World style aquarium Installation for the public to experience, where thought provoking, evocative images will stand alone as art works and embody creative activism as education.

The public are encouraged to pledge their support though sharing their experiences with others and choosing to stand against animal performances permanently. We will be holding talks and outreach workshops during the exhibition which will run for 2 weeks in Leeds city centre.

Yorkshire Life Aquatic’s current project is ‘The Human Aquarium’ and we are proud to be partnered with The World Cetacean Alliance and Plastic-Free Me, working together to help cetaceans and our environment. The exhibition takes place February 15th-28th at St John’s Centre in Leeds City Centre. If you would like to find out how you could support us. The Human Aquarium Exhibition arrives in Leeds this February and takes us on a journey experienced by confined sea mammals, from their capture, to training, to performing in man-made tanks and pools. It will take place from February 15th-28th 2019 in Unit 3, St John’s Centre, Leeds City Centre. Alongside the Mertography by highly acclaimed photographer Tom Martin, there will be work form local artists and a range of activities to take part in. This includes free family-friendly workshops that are open to the public, as well as a range of participatory activities available throughout the exhibition.

Activities include: Whale Making using recycled materials, Mermaid Mondays, Dolphin Scramble, as well as Plastic Awareness, Film-Making for Activism and a night of Talks. You can add to our wave made entirely of plastic bottles or find out more about local and global action and groups from our ‘small action, big changes’ area. There is an evening of Talks which include the Real Junk Food Project, Leeds Green Peace, the Marine Society, Plastic Free Me and the World Cetacean Alliance. Here we willl be showing an original film created by young people in Armley as part of our #iwill collaboration with Plastic Free Me.

The project uses Mer-folk (performers) in place of marine mammals, to expose how we have become desensitized to the realities of captivity and its effect on these animals. It also looks at the sea of plastic we consume ( literally) and its effects on the worlds oceans.

Using photography, film and live installations, the project parallels the hidden aspects of captivity within the entertainment industry.

Although, the last Dolphinarium closed in the Uk in 1993, these ‘SeaWorld’ style dolphin/orca shows are still a multi-million pound industry. This is despite the success of documentary films such as Blackfish and The Covewhich exposed the cruelty suffered by the captive cetaceans.

The substitution of perforMERs for dolphins and orcas in photos and film aims to engage with the public in land locked cities who may  not be aware of the issues with captivity. The Human Aquarium project will signpost ways we can all appreciate these amazing creatures in the wild, as well as highlight both local and global projects happening that the public can get involved in and support.

The Mermaids are lucky enough to be performing at the legendary Duckie at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern.

“Duckie see ourselves in the tradition of British illegitimate theatre that spans centuries – from music hall to punk rock, penny gaffs to the fairground, gaudy variety to underground clubbing.

We coined the term ‘event culture’ to describe our audience interactive experiences that blur the boundaries between theatre, nightclubs and arty show business.”
We are heading down to the big smoke to perform our new cabaret style show.

The event runs 9pm – 2am our slot is at 11pm.

  • The Human Aquarium

The Human Aquarium, a new project starting in 2018 taking Yorkshire Life Aquatic into new territory.
We are very concerned with what is happening in our oceans and the plight of the cetacean creatures (such as orcas, dolphins) within it.
This project follows on from Planet Mermaid: an installation that was part of Planetine Exhibition at Leeds Corn Exchange in 2015, that highlighted the damage plastics are doing to marine life.

The Human Aquarium will focus on what is happening to marine animals kept in captivity by using art, performance, and ‘mermaids’ to illustrate this. We are inspired to take action for many reasons, including issues highlighted by films such as:   Black Fish, The Cove and the Blue Planet. As mermaids, we want to help raise awareness for our fellow ‘sea dwellers’. The project will incorporate multiple arts forms and use creative activism to create immersive installations and performances over the next few years.

We are consulting with international organisations and experts including:
    The Dolphin Project
    World Cetacean Alliance
    The Born Free Foundation
One thing you can do is to make a PLEDGE TODAY to not go to a show featuring sea mammals
